BB Cunningham started with a vocal of Bye Bye Johnny/Sweet Little Rock 'n' Roller
(Buck Hutcheson was on guitar, along with Kenny Lovelace), and then Jerry came on in black jeans and a grey jacket, looking good. And his voice turned out to be better and
stronger than we've heard in years. Certainly he sounded better than he did at the birthday two years ago, and that was pretty good! Also he sang every song all the
way through, and - according to Ross who was listening carefully - got all the lyrics correct.
"Good to be here. I'm happy to be here." Then into Roll Over Beethoven. Kenny standing beside him, looking over his shoulder all the time.
"You get
older. It's getting better. It's really good to be here. Hank Williams had a no. 1 on this. I had a gold on this. It was the flip side of Great Balls of
Fire". You Win Again. With lots of Jerry Lee lyrics ("that was Killer's great sin. You trusted Jerry Lee" etc.), and the piano solo we all know and love.
CC Rider, including "Jerry Lee's taking a trip woman, and I won't be back till fall. " and "Your regular stud's done gone".
Then "If you want
us to sound like that, it depends on what you're on and what you're drinking. We cut that out a long time ago". Into Drinkin' Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee. Great guitar and piano solos.
A request was shouted out for High School Confidential. "A little bit later. Let me get my breath back a little".
Sweet Little Sixteen. Great piano solo. All the lyrics. Before the solo "Take it brother". "Chuck Berry. He knew how to write a song. He had 10 number Ones in a row.".
The drummer suggested Over the Rainbow, and JLL said "OK let's get serious." He played it, and the lyrics included "There's a land Jimmy Swaggart
dreams of". Great piano and guitar solos. "You heard Judy Garland's version. That's pretty hard to beat. A beautiful song."
Chantilly Lace. Including "You can never tell about Jerry Lee Lewis. I might."
Following that the audience started the chant of "Jerry, Jerry"
(there were lots of Europeans in the crowd - French, Belgian, German, Italian, Brits). Into "You and me and Bobby McGee". Again, all the lyrics correct.
Then I
shouted out a request for "Who Will The Next Fool Be?" He responded, "Me. That's a proven fact. The older I get, the more I realize it. That's great song.
Charlie Rich wrote it for me." He starts to play it, but "It's been so many years ago, I don't know that one. Let's do a rock'n'roll song".
Into Rockin' my life away. Includes (before the solo) "Play the guitar, boy" .
"I'm boogied to death, but I ain't gonna quit. I'm even coming out with
a new album. I've been saying that for 2 years. But if it doesn't come out on the right label with the right promotion, it's no point. That's enough of that."
Into
Whole Lotta Shakin'. Great piano solo, and before the guitar solo, "Kenny!". Before the "Let's go one time" there was a tremendous roar from the crowd. His
piano sounded fabulous.
Then, "I've cooled myself quite a bit but I'm still rockin' Jerry Lee. And this is a rock'n'roll record. Beautiful song too. Clever lyrics. I'm
sure you'll enjoy... Into Great Balls of Fire. Huge cheers at the end, but no encore.
The verdict? Ross says 9 out of 10. I thought it was one of his really great
shows. 45 minutes. No songs were cut short. A great rapport with his band, and with the audience - he spoke to us and thanked us. Voice very strong. Some great piano solos. A
triumph!!!
