More information (new songs!) about Jerry's upcoming CD The Pilgrim
We received an email from Terry Pace, who had the privilege to listen to all the songs recorded for The Pilgrim. Thanks Terry for this very interesting update!
"My name is Terry Pace. I'm an
author/journalist/music historian in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. I
was a close friend of Sam Phillips (I was one of the honorary pallbearers at his funeral) and I am a lifelong fan of The Killer. I had the tremendous honor and privilege of hearing THE PILGRIM in its entirety this weekend and wanted to pass along an update on the guests and tracks, in gratitude for your website providing the most timely and detailed accounts of the album's making thus far. Anyway, here are a few updates/modifications of the track list currently posted:
(1) Keith Richards may very well play guitar on HONKY TONK WOMEN, but his official duet with Jerry Lee is on Mack Vickery's THAT KIND OF FOOL.
(2)
The Merle Haggard cut is a great duet on JUST A BUMMIN' AROUND.
(3) The Neil Young duet (one of the best) is a deep blues jam on YOU DON'T HAVE TO GO.
The album is so good,
each track brought tears to my eyes. ALL of the guest stars deliver outstanding contributions, but producer
Jimmy Rip keeps Jerry Lee front and center (vocal AND piano) on every note of each and every cut. The guest stars (even perennial spotlight-stealer Little Richard!) are clearly there to offer stellar SUPPORT - they NEVER, EVER overshadow the one-and-only star of the show ... THE KILLER!"

Interview with producer Jimmy Rip for The Jerry Lee Lewis Start Page
December 3, 2005 Jimmy Rip,
the producer of Jerry's upcoming album The Pilgrim, kindly offered to answer some questions about this project for the fans eagerly awaiting the release of this
album. We would like to thank him for taking the time for this interview and keeping us informed.
Could you tell us how the
impressive list of guest artists came about? Did you come up with all the names, were there also suggestions from Jerry himself?
"The guest artists list
was thought up by Steve Bing and myself. The first song we cut for the record was the Mick Jagger song Evening Gown. Having known and worked with Mick for
many years it was easy to pick up the phone and ask if he'd like to be on it. Mick and Ronnie Wood were very gracious, they were first guys in. The
record wasn't supposed to be a "duets" album. But the more songs we cut, the more Steve and I would say ..."hey , wouldn't it be great if _
_ _ _was on this one". Basically our fantasy list, and because I was calling about a Jerry Lee record we got pretty much everyone we asked."
How did you propose the songs to
Jerry? Did you send him tapes, did you visit him and discuss songs with him? Was it easy to convince him to record particular songs that you thought were great for him to do?
"I would send Jerry c.d.'s to
listen to.
We tried to pick songs that had lyrics that really related to Jerry's life, so he could sing from his heart. Some songs he wasn't quite sure about for various reasons, but he gave it everything he had on all of them. I think there's only a couple that we tried that didn't make it. There's not much left over for an out-take box set thats for sure!"
How well-prepared was Jerry when
he entered the recording studio? Did he have a lot of 'homework" to do
because of more or less fixed arrangements, or were the sessions more like a jam session, relying on Jerry's talent to improvise?
"He definitely knew what he
wanted to do
when he got in the studio. Phoebe said she never thought she'd see the day when she'd hear Led Zeppelin blasting from her daddy's music room, but when we cut Rock and Roll Jerry had a great take on it already in his head. On some songs I had arrangements in mind but Jerry will always turn any song into Lewis Music and, I wouldn't have it any other way!"
Are there still any flaws or omissions in the list of "tracks to appear"?
"Right now we might actually have too many songs to fit on one c.d.! So a final list is still being worked out."
Some fans were surprised that
there are no female guests on the album. There was talk of a duet with Stacey
Michelle, but this duet has apparently been dropped. Could you tell us what song they recorded together and why the song was dropped?
"Stacey is a good friend and
one of my
favorite singers, I wish more people knew about her. She is from Memphis and first introduced me to J.W. which got this whole thing started. Without her there would be no album. She sang on a great Louisiana soaked version of Why You Been Gone So Long. But like I said, we have an enviable problem .....too many songs for one record. We have a follow-up record to this album already in the can and Stacey's song will be on that."
It has been rumored that the
photo of Jerry standing in front of the Sun Studio will be the cover photo of the album. Do you know if Sony still plans to use this photo?
"I'm sure that photo will be
used but I'm not sure if it's the cover. That call is up to Sony. Great photo though. We stopped traffic that night to put up a huge spotlight so Jerry was
casting that long shadow on 706. Many of the vocals were recorded in Sun after hours (when the tours stopped) with Jerry sitting on that Whole Lotta Shaken spot."
Will Jerry write one or more pages for the album sleeve and will all these guests? That would be a great, more personal addition to the album.
"The liner notes are being written by the great writer Peter Guralnick. I think he's the perfect guy for the job."
Is there a song that will be released as a single and will there be a promotional video?
"Boy.....I hope there's 5!!!! But that is Sony's call."
Have any video or audio recordings been made from the recording sessions (that could be used for promotional purposes)?
"Yes, but not much of the
actual
recording sessions. I tried to keep it low key and relaxed for Jerry without a lot of cameras around. There was one great day with a full film camera crew filming Jerry and Kid Rock with the band actually recording Honky Tonk Woman. I hope ya'll get to see that."
We know that already some
recording sessions haven taken place for a follow-up album. Could you reveal us
something about the plans regarding the follow-up album, for instance: Is this an album without duets? What kind of songs will be on it?
"It started out with Jerry
saying he
wanted to make a blues record. But the songs range from Johnny Ray's Cry to Gene Autry, Jimmy Reed, and even a little gospel. At the moment there's a couple of guests and we're not planning a duets record, but.......that's what we said last time.
"I'd like to thank all the fans for being patient. Making a record like this is a giant undertaking. There were so many very busy schedules to
coordinate and finding the right label was not so simple either. It was never anything but an honor and a pleasure, but it took a lot of time. I know you've all seen the
change in Jerry. He's happier and best of all
healthier by one thousand percent in the four years it's taken to get this record together. I couldn't be prouder of the record or happier for Jerry. We really need all the fans to make 2006 Jerry's year. He deserves it. Everybody better buy two copies, 'cause I know you're gonna wear one out!
Hang in there it's comin'."

Tonight's show in St Etienne cut short due to illness
We received this message from Denis Angelotti:
" Bad news... Jerry stayed only 17 minutes on
stage. He arrived in good condition, played the first songs powerful, and....collapsed more or less and needed help to leave the stage. The band continued the show for a
while. An ambulance has been called, but after all Jerry returned to his hotel in Lyon. We hope to have more news tomorrow."

Jerry in Avoine (July 2), by Pierre Pennone:
"Just had a talk with Peter Hayman. I
talked to him on his mobile while
he was on the highway driving back to Lyon for the show in St Etienne tomorrow night. He said the show last night at the "blues festival" in Avoine, near Tours, was great. The audience was very cheerful shouting for Jerry, there was about 2000 people and it was under a tent. Jerry was in a very good mood and did a very good show making everybody happy. He did a show of about the same length as the first three shows, i.e., between 40 and 45 minutes. The only new song compared to previous shows was "You Belong To Me". We couldn't talk long obviously as he was driving. But if you want to know more.... you will see Peter's usual great show reports in the Fire Ball Mail (probably the one after next)."

Zondag 26 juni a.s. "A Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On" dus in "Three
Sisters Amsterdam" voorafgaande aan en na afloop van het Jerry Lee Lewis concert in Paradiso! Vorig jaar was deze party een groot succes dus mis dit niet!! (Klik hier voor foto's.)"

Pre-show meet in Amsterdam on Sunday, June 26
Message from TEX: "For everybody wanting to meet
other fans prior to Jerry Lee's show Sunday June 26th there will be a pre-show meet again at Three Sisters Amsterdam
at the Kleine Gartmanplantsoen 5 (everybody is also welcome there after the show)! The very best location in the city of Amsterdam for such a 'warming up party'!
This
café is a two-minute walk away from the Paradiso club and is an
establishment with good food (there is also a steak house, "New York Steakhouse", on the upper floor) and - for this special occasion - as of 11 am A PIANO ready to be played by Killer fans!! For sure there'll be several musicians among the fans ready to get you warmed up for the big show. Don't miss this! Last year's pre-show meet at "Three Sisters Amsterdam" was a huge success as those of you who were there will remember (click here for pictures).
"Three Sisters Amsterdam" opens at 11 am (closing time around 1 am).
Important: Café "Three Sisters Amsterdam" has several branches in Amsterdam.
The meeting place is NOT the 'grand pub' "Three Sisters Amsterdam" right
behind the tram stop, but the one closer to Paradiso. So make sure you have the right address with you!"

Short report of show in Malibu, CA (May 21) by Elaine Orlando:
"He did one hour and the audience just couldn't get enough!
The Malibu Inn holds 350 people, there was less than that, I think, not sure. The Pacific Ocean was across the street, and you needed its presence to cool down the area, Jerry was fabulous! He closed with "Great Balls of Fire" - sang "Somewhere Over The Rainbow, "You Win Again" ....No Encore, after GBOF the band packed up."

Short report of show in Highland, CA (May 19) by Bob Trepanier:
"Well I just got back from the San Manuel show.
Jerry Lee went on first. He
opened with "Drinkin' Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee" and only did 6 more songs. In order, the rest were "Another Place Another Time", High School Confidential", "Trouble In Mind", "Boogie Woogie Country Man", "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On" and "Great Balls Of Fire". He looked good and played with more enthusiasm than the last time I saw him. His piano playing was EXCELLENT. After he did "Boogie Woogie Country Man" Kenny Lovelace talked to him and I think told him he could only do 2 more songs. At the end of "GBOF" he kicked the piano bench back and left the stage. The band was excellent."
|
|
|
Little Richard and Chuck Berrywere also on the bill. Bob
Trepanier: "All in all Jerry Lee certainly came out looking the best. I think the audience was disapointed he didn`t play more, but I guess that`s all he was allowed. The hall was packed, no empty seats, I`m guessing a crowd of 3000."

Bill Strom passed away
Jerry's organ player
Bill Strom passed away last night at the age of 64 after severe health problems.
Bill Strom first worked with Jerry from 1970 to 1972 when he was a
member of "The Memphis Beats". Since then he was in close contact with Jerry and reappeared in his band several times. He came back on tour with The Killer Band in 2000 until his last days.
Strom was not only respected as a great musician, but also as a very friendly person. My thoughts are with his family, friends, Jerry and the band. May he rest in peace.
A Condolence Book has been opened on this site. Feel free to express your condolences and share your memories. May this book be of some comfort to the family in these difficult times.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Memorial Park
Funeral Home at 5668 Poplar, Memphis, TN 38119-0885. People can send flowers or donations to the American Cancer Society in memory of Bill Strom.

Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page honours Jerry Lee Lewis at he Grammy Awards ceremony for lifetime achievement:
From the Memphis newspaper Commercial Appeal, February 13:
"Accepting his Lifetime Achievement Award from the Grammys on Saturday, Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page offered a little adulation of his own.
"It really is an honor and a privilege because of this
illustrious company," said Page, who acknowledged only one musician from the podium, and it wasn't any of his "Stairway to Heaven" band mates. "Mr. Jerry Lee Lewis," he said, pointing to a table where the Sun Records legend was sitting. The British guitar great then exhorted a hearty "Boy!" more like the Killer's biggest fan than a fellow icon."

Jerry is among the artists who will receive the Recording Academy's Lifetime Achievement Award. Among the others being honored
are Eddy Arnold, Janis Joplin, Pinetop Perkins and Led Zeppelin. The awards "recognize music people who have made
a lasting contribution to culture around the world," academy
President Neil Portnow said in a statement. "These profoundly inspiring figures are being honored as legendary performers and archetypal musicians, cultural ambassadors, and technical visionaries."The honors will be presented at a Los Angeles ceremony February 12, the night prior to the 47th annual Grammy Awards.
This is what the press release of the Recording Academy says about Jerry:
Jerry Lee Lewis — Rock and roll's
first great wild man, Lewis' larger-than-life personality was matched only by his
energy and skill at the piano. When he emerged on the rock scene in 1957, he created his own unique brand of music by ignoring musical boundaries and merging blues, gospel, country, and rock. His work has transcended fads and fashions and is considered one of the best collections of American music in existence.
See http://www.grammy.com/press/press_releases/2005/0104a.aspx for the complete press release.
